Maintaining proper oral care during pregnancy is very necessary

Oral care during Pregnancy

As neglect of oral care can lead to different types of oral complications, right from gingivitis, periodontitis,to caries and even to orthodontic problems.

In pregnancy it is very common to see different levels of fluctuations  in the levels of female hormones like Progesterone, and Estrogen.

These fluctuations initiate gum swellings of varying levels. In some instances it involves only the tip of the gum, while in others it may include whole of the gingiva.

These swelling make it difficult to maintain oral hygine, as brushing may initiate bleeding from gums. Poor oral hygiene leads to periodontal issues. During pregnancy patients my develop Hyperacidity and some times Xerostomia (little or no saliva) making it easier for the plaque to accumulate and multiple caries can occur in the cervical region of tooth. Change in hormones also affect Bone density and Bone quality leading to vertical or horizontal bone loss.

Postpartum most of the swelling subsides and bone loss shows clearly between the teeth and gaps are formed. Visiting a dental professional during 2nd trimester can help greatly. One can get a thorough professional cleaning , evaluation of the occlusion, get necessary adjustments done, and cavities filled

If necessary he may prescribe vitamins and calcium supplements.
